#302 Moosehead - Dave Lomasney (lake and streamer versions) #302 Moosehead - Dave Lomasney (lake and streamer versions)

Tied by: Dave Lomasney
Moosehead Lake Fly popularized by Mary Orvis Maybury

Hook: Partridge CS15 #2
Thread: White 6/0
Tag: Gold flat tinsel
Tail: Golden pheasant crest
Body: Claret floss
Rib: Gold flat tinsel
Belly: Orange bucktail
Throat: Orange schlappen
Wing: 4 claret hackles
Shoulder: Golden pheasant tippet with a small slip of bronze mallard
Eye: Jungle cock nail
Head: Black ostrich head and black thread

Notes: Dave has done wonderful work converting the Moosehead lake fly into a majestic and regal streamer. The Moosehead lake fly is a part of the Orvis display put together by Mary Orvis Maybury for the 1893 Chicago World's Fair which is currently on display at Orvis museum in Manchester Vermont. The pattern is not officially described in print, luckily Don Bastion has been collection information on the missing flies in the collection and provided Dave with the recipe and images of the original for reference. Dave has done a magnificent job of maintaining the original spirit of the Moosehead lake fly sporting a stately claret wing drawing from the wound hackle in the lake fly.

Thanks everyone for the comments, I haven't tied one to fish, but it looks like it would be a killer fall patten around here!

Peter, I have had the claret spool of floss for over twenty years...just never used it until this fly. The hackles were given to me by a good friend.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
