You can safely wash off any powder on skins you buy. It's either borax, salt or some preservation substance. If you keep the skins dry and have them stored in Ziploc bags, you're fairly sure that no bugs will find their way to them.

Take care when rinsing the starling skins. They can be rather thin and will become fragile when soaked. Simply rinse them shortly and maybe add a bit of soap and rinse again if they are very dirty.

What about bird skin

What about bird skins like starling that sometimes might come with white powder on them (borax or drying agent for killing bugs?) I was told that sometimes the skins carry larvae and the powder is meant to kill them just in case. Is it ok to wash them and wash off that white powder?

Wonderful work. I have been trying to find the correct pen and ink to do the job without much success. Can you tell me what pen(s) you use and what do you use for ink. I have seen and read several articles about using paints that seem to work pretty well.

I don't like the scierra river bullets because you have to let the hook and silicone tubing stay unattached to the bullet tube. I don't believe Noels question was adequately answered. I'd like to see some detail on this. Basically, is the hook and tube unattached from the bullet.

I met a man who was

I met a man who was a Doctor from Maine Back in the late 90s and we became good friends. He was also a fly fisherman like me. he was ailing and one day I was doing some work for him and he handed me and old sheep skin with a bunch of old flies on it. He told me that when he was younger he got these from Carrie Stevens a famous fisherwomen from Maine. I have never tried to fish with them they are still wrapped up in that old sheep skin. there are some grey ghost in the mix. How can I get these verified?

I've spent the last three or four years trying to find the right Grannom pattern to no avail, and found the mainstream UK pre-tied market lacking for this particular hatch. Amato Publication books are a great source of information. Most are packed with patterns and the patterns usually work. I highly recommend their releases and I have over a dozen. :)
