How do you tie sculpin wool for the head? Would appreciate some help. Rene
Beautiful streamers. I'll be tying some of these. Thanks, Bob!
Not quite sure how I stumbled on you page, but it was heartfelt. I often yell at fishermen who tell me SOMEDAY, You are so right in doing it now. I talked a 65 year old guy into going to Alaska last year. Met him in a parking lot steelhead fishing in Pulaski NY. Yelled at him for saying he wants to fish Alaska someday. He went had a great time and we have been friends ever since. The other line I dislike is a fishing trip of a life time. He'll if it was that good go back. I wish you luck and better health.
You can change the blue Pukeko feather on the top of a Craigs Nighttime fly with those feathers! This makes a fantastic fly for after dark.
Here is a link to a guides page that has a pic of a craigs night time on it.

All the best.

I'm pleased to see that you mentioned the history of the pattern and that you had been tying a lot of tubes. When I first saw this pattern I knew how I would use it, and as a life long tier and fisher, respectfully modify it too. I say that knowing that tradition sometimes gets in the way of fishings local practices. I will tie this as a tube or on a Wadington shank using a short shanked hook.
My area of the northwest coast fish seem to throw the short hooks less often and the price and accessability are much more forgiving. Knowing that tradition for some tyers is precisely why they do them this way I am reluctant on occasion to mention that altho I love a pattern I have observed I tend to adapt them to the waters and needs of the rivers I fish. The Grande Ronde in Southeast Washington loves any fly you fish for steelhead as long as it's Black. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks Dan. That's the wonderful thing about tying your own, you can modify anything to suit your needs. I'd lover to see this in shank, tube or hook form taking a wild steelhead. That would be pretty awesome.
Barry, very nice, especially the Pink BT. I have been working on a lot of Smelt patterns lately, and came up with one that uses CoqdeLeon over a pink hackle. You might try that out also.
Again, excellent job!
Cheers, Joel
That is truly a beautiful pattern. Perhaps one of the best imitations of small rainbow trout, with the pink underwing and the speckled CDL outer wing hackle.

This is an outstanding fly. I adore it. Wonderful use of materials, and it clearly will be a winner with the fish too!
Fantastic pattern Barry I love the use of CDL in the wings on a few streamers I use as well. I will be tying a few of these before April1 here.
I like these ideas..
I just started tieing flys about. 3 months ago.
Just something go do. but I've. Been looking for pritty and colorful flys to tie and this web sit really helped.
Thank you guys
Very nice ties. Thanks for keeping alive fly tying history. I've never heard of Ora Smith flies.
Hi,Carrie G. Stevens is a great aunt of mine. Just had a long conversation with a customer of mine who's son in law is the inventor of the Cut throat leader and did a quick search for Carrie to see what is written. A relative of mine, Monk, in Maine has has one of the largest Rainbows taken in Maine with the gray Ghost mounted in his living room.
Hello Davie I been watching most of your fly tying videos on you tube the are brilliant I've just been tying flies the last few months where do you get the razor foam from (bugs) or can I use an alternative
Thank you D Demetriou
George,
I am the one who needs a checkup from the neckup! I didn't submit the video, but I published it. A visitor entered it, and when that happens, I usually lower my critical level, because we want more user submitted videos!
I currently add about 98% of the videos on this channel, so any user contributions are welcome, and the door widens a bit when they come.
Regarding the video itself:
The music... well one man's trash is another man's treasure. It's a matter of taste.
Information level... we don't demand information. Living images of people fishing is enough.
Looking like an idiot... who doesn't?
Made with respect... I fail to see where it doesn't respect the sport. They even use a net to land the fish! Not a grip, not a lip grab.
It might not be the best, but I can tell you that I see worse and MUCH worse every day.
Martin
Baby tarpon in Cozumel........The music stunk.......the video was uninformative, the guy fishing looked like an idiot and whoever gave this video the o.k.for the website needs a checkup from the neckup. In the future please show videos that are made with respect for the sport , I hope that video is removed from your GREAT website as it is an insult to our great sport of fly fishing.....................George
Pino,
I'm sure they would work for Swedish seatrout. And it would be fun to hear about an Italian marble trout caught on one of our Scandinavian flies!
Martin
Hi Martin,
actually I'd like to try your flies abroad, for seatrout in Swedish rivers,
but I will for sure try some of these for our fabulous marble trouts.
I'll let you know ....
Pino
… I have a small favor to ask.
Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.
The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
