Spey casting
Forums:
Hi there everyone, I am a New Zealand fly fisherman and I have just bought a 14ft StCroix 9wt spey rod, I have used this rod on the Tongariro river and it is fantastic, however I am realy teaching myself to cast it and I am sure I could do better! I think I am more roll casting than spey casting.
So can anyone recomend a DVD or a book on Spey casting? I would take some lessons but no one seems to teach Spey casting down here in N.Z.
Look forward to any and all sugestions.
Thanks.
Mike.

Mike,
Mike,
I would recommend 2 videos:
1. "Introduction to spey casting" with Andre Scholz

2. "The perfect cast" with Henrik Mortensen

Have fun with spey casting!

Thanks very much Stefan, I have just placed an order for the perfect cast.
I can hardly wait for it to arrive. 8)
Once again Thanks

Hi Mike,
Hi Mike,
"Speycasting a New Technique" by Hugh Falkus is a classic in this regard. There happens to be one up for auction on eBay right now.
Good luck,

Mike,
Try to learn the underhand cast - also referred to as the Scandinavian Spey cast. It's less complex and a lot easier to master and something you can learn in an hour or two - and master in a year or two... ;-)
The "real" Spey cast (Falkus style) is not as well suited for modern rods and lines in my view.
And regarding learning: I can only concur with the recommendation of Henrik's DVD's. His latest is on the Scandinavian Spey cast. See more on his web page. His recent book in Danish is being translated to English right now and should be out soon.
But the best way to learn is definitely to get instruction. Send me a ticket and I will be more than happy to show you! ;-) I will even bring my own rods and lines...

:D Sorry Martin but the airfares are down to you! I will however take you to the Tongariro river and anywhere else in the North Island you fancy if you can get here!
I will keep an eye out for that D.V.D. it sounds like excactly what I need.
Thanks very much.
Mike.
Hey guys,
Hey guys,
Is there any who has Loop Opti Zpey?
I need some opinions about lines
Hi Mike,
Hi Mike,
Sorry for coming in so late, if you not already have gotten DVD's about spey / underhandcasting I can warmly recommend Spey to Z http://web.mac.com/speycaster/SpeytoZ/HOME.html

Hi Mike,
Hi Mike,
one of the best DVDs about spey casting & techniques I can recommend is the "Rioôs Modern Spey Casting" with Simon Gawesworth. The DVDs show what it takes to understand that way of casting, standard casting, trick casts as well as techniques in all details and the know-how, also bio-kinetic movements. This is pure technique!
Lykke til and Tight Lines,
Frank
Thanks very much for all the
Thanks very much for all the input guys. I was lucky enough to have a lesson with Rene Vas from Manic Tackle on the weekend and I learnt as much in an hour with him as I did from the DVDs and Spey casting websites. It was great, now I just have to find the time to practice!
All the best.
Mike.
