Clouser hook

A great tip for Clousers

Got a response from Joe Cornwall, with a great tip for getting those Clousers uniform.

Martin

Welcome to the world of the Clouser minnow - one of my most productive flies. I thought I'd pass along a tip that works wonders for me. Try using a Mustad 33903 double kink shank popper hook to tie this fly. Nestle the lead or lead free hour-glass eyes right into that kink - you'll hold the eyes on with less thread wraps and they won't spin as easily on the hook. Also the kink helps to ensure that you always have identical proportions for your flies. It works wonders for me with my smallmouth, freshwater white bass and striper flies.

Tight lines.

Mustad has a whole bunch of hooks with kinks.

You can see the kinked popper hooks on Mustad's site here.

PS: Joe is quite an authoriy on the subject of warm water flies. He is the author of the book Fly Fishing Warm Water Rivers, recently reviewed by Bob Petti.

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
