JP Mobuto

Here we will be tying a JP Mobuto fly. The Mobutos became popular in Iceland in the 1980's and on and at that time the body material that was used is called swannundaze. The swannundaze has today been replaced by vinyl rib in 99% cases. I will tie the JP Mobuto with vinyl rib simply because I've never had the original material. Most of the Mobuto flies here in Iceland at the time were suppose to imitate pupa at particular state in the circle. The JP Mobuto was suppose to imitate a snail from the (Gastropoda) family. I knew Jón Pedersen personally, he's one of my early teachers in fly tying and I can never thank him enough for what he taught me. We will call this fly simple JP Mobuto to differentiate it from the other Mobutos that have been made. The JP Mobuto is among the best trout flies that has ever been made in Iceland, it works great for all the freshwater fish we have except salmon. Jón fished a lot on this fly in the Þingvellir lake and often got a really good catch on it. The JP Mobuto is a great option for both stream and lake fishing. The fly catches both brown trout and arctic char. Simple to tie and totally worth keeping a few in your box when you go fishing. It's not difficult to tie and I highly recommend it using a slow drag.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
