"The Ace of Spades" was originally named by the late U.K. pro-tyer, Dave Collyer, The dressing is. 4/10 l.s. hook, blk thread, dressed Matuka style, with 2 pairs black cock or hen hackles (back to back) over a black chenille body ribbed with silver oval tinsel. A "crown or overwing" of bronze mallard fibres with natural guinea fowl false hackle. This can be weighted &/or beaded if desired & has taken a lot of fish since it's inception back in the 1960's when it was first published in the now de-funked "Angling" magazine where Dave had a monthly column. It was also in his first book "Fly Dressing"

It seems that Mr.Schmookler didn't do much, if any research on any of the U.K. patterns in Forgotten Flies, as I don't recall any of them being correct.
A very nicely tied fly, but why did he and many other tiers place the barred rabbit with the bars facing up? Don't salmon and steelhead come from below to take a swinging fly, I know tarpon are almost always coming from below to take a fly.
Martin,
Merry Christmas and a happy, as healthy as possible New Year 2013 for you and your family.
I am really grateful for your GFF website and all your input in it and with it, all the input in my fly fishing and tying.
All the best
Jan
Truly a beautiful pattern and tied to perfection. Great job I think I may have to give one of these a try.
Always amazing the different types of flies
