Marcelo's Biography

I began fly fishing in the early seventies. Jorge Donovan and Bebe Anchorena were my mentors, they were fantastic casters and know the rivers intimately. Both were very good friends of Joe Brooks and it was from him that they learnt the way of the big streamers and monster browns. I worked with Jorge in as a partner in the first Argentinean fly fishing shop created in 1974, Fly Fishing Enterprise. In the mid eighties Jorge retired and I keep working in the fly fishing market till now. I have a fly fishing import company named Buenos Aires Anglers in Argentina who distributes many of the mayor brands like Sage, Simms and SA. Hareline provides us with fine fly materials. The Argentinian anglers love to tie a lot.

I have been tying since the very beginning, I studied all the great tiers old and new and I owe a lot to many of them. I tie almost any kind of fly, many for fishing because I have been guiding for the last 30 years for trout in Patagonia and golden dorado in many countries. I love to tie classic streamers, buck tails, impressionistic nymphs, salmon and spey flies.

I was very lucky to have had several known authors include my flies in their books even without knowing me personally. So I have to thank John Roberts for including my flies in The World Best Trout Flies, Paul Schmookler for letting me to be included with so many spectacular fly tiers in his books Rare and Unusual Fly Tying Materials Vol. II and Forgotten Flies or the Art of Angling Journal. Terry Lawton also included some of my flies in his book Flies that Catch Trout and sent me a bunch of Sawyer original pheasant tails, one of my treasures now.

Just to make my life easier, I build bamboo rods and fish them a lot along my country. My mother paints watercolors, and my father painted with oils when he was young so I think fly fishing in my case is another form of art and I try to feel like an artist creating something unique every time I tie a fly, build a rod or fish.

Marcelo,

I'm an avid canadian fly tyer with a taste for classic streamers. I've got a copy of the most beautiful book, ForgottenFlies and have always admired your work. In particular, the quality of your heads are simply amazing. Can you indicate what head cement you use to obtain such a fabulous finish?

Thank you in advance,

Marcelo,

I have been admiring the detail and quality of your fly tying and your flies are just stunning. I
especially love your version of the Parmachene Belle. I would love to know what brand of wool you used for the body. Did you wrap the throat feathers collar style first? Thank you for sharing these beautiful flies with us.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
