Fly fishing for wild trout in the far north of Scandinavia, 400km above the Arctic Circle.
In this Loop Fly Fishing Adventures episode, Rolf Nylinder heads north with his friend Håvard Stubø in search of wild trout, dry-fly fishing and the legendary Vulgata mayfly hatch.
The plan sounds simple: arrive at the right river at the right time, find the mayflies, and fish to rising trout. But nature rarely follows a schedule.
With the spring season arriving earlier than expected, Rolf and Håvard spend a week moving between rivers and lakes, searching for the right combination of water temperature, weather, insect activity and rising fish. But the big hatch they're waiting for remains elusive.
When the rivers are blown out by heavy rain, they turn their attention towards the sea. But the search continues, and so does the waiting.
Finally, in a remote river above the Arctic Circle, everything comes together as a Vulgata hatch begins and Rolf gets the chance to experience the kind of dry-fly fishing he came north to find.
Along the way, the film becomes as much about the rhythm of fly fishing as the fishing itself: reading the water, adapting to changing conditions, spending time in wild places and accepting that success comes when nature allows it.
