Return of the Guide is a fly fishing film shot in Patagonia, Argentina, following guide Erik Argotti as he returns to Jurassic Lake — known locally as Lago Strobel — decades after helping establish one of the most legendary rainbow trout fisheries on the planet.
25 years ago, Argentine conservationist and lodge owner Luciano “Lucho” Alba pulled over on a dusty road in northern Patagonia to pick up a hitchhiking fly fisherman with rod tubes sprouting from his backpack. That split-second decision changed the course of both their lives. Together they helped pioneer the fishery where rainbow trout grow to staggering size and a harsh beauty blooms in the cracks of volcanic stone. The film also features head guide Martín Rubino, whose deep connection to the place and people brings the present-day story into focus.
“Some guy picked me up on the side of the road to piss off his girlfriend 25 years ago. And now I’m here. It just reminds me how much the relationships we make through fly fishing shape our lives.” — Erik Argotti
