Ken,
You can use any feather that has a shape you like for flatwings. Saddle feathers are usually the best. You want fairly long, soft feathers of a reasonably uniform width. Many dry fly saddles contain lots of feathers useful for this purpose.

Glad to see this how to. I'm going to try it as a lampre eel in the Great Lakes. Flatwing is hard to find and it seems there are only so many feather types on a chicken and some can be labeled and sold for different purposes. You can use any long and narrow cock saddle feather dry fly ish as it were.

Looks like a beautiful pattern to me. I bet it would be productive for bass.
Jim I wasn't aware of this fly until this morning when this post went up. I took a ride up to my camp and was warming up and opened a copy of "Trolling flies for Tout & Salmon" and there was the pattern. I must have missed it the other hundred times I've read that book. It looks like a great dark day fly and I'll give it a try.
Thanks Charlie...

Great innovation Pete. And some nice welds.
I hope they let you out of jail for good behavior for the upcoming holidays.
It was a pleasure meeting you and watching you welding at the symposium.
Keep up the great work.
I really like the look of this pattern, the colours in this streamer work so well...
I like your page because its really well set up to read. Plenty of info and right to the point.
