David Talley's Gray Ghost

For the most part, it turned out better than expected. It was definitely an interesting exercise. I had a hard time keeping the bucktail from being too unruly without the use of both hands and tension from a bobbin. Also, the head...my poor head! You wanted one shot, you got it, but it ain't pretty! Tools used: bodkin and scissors. Tool I missed most: whip finisher. As embarrassing as it is, I've never learned to do it by hand. Hence the sloppy head (half hitches weren't cutting the mustard).

First setup

Most of us know how, but this article is for the ones who never set up a fly reel from scratch. See which knots will work where and what type and amount of backing you most probably want. Start with this simple trout setup, and you can expand to other types.

The Bad Beginning

German Kai Nolting caught his first sea trout in his second cast for this silver bullet of the ocean. It would take three years before he caught the second one! In this article he thinks back and analyzes why this happened and draws some conclusions that may help others be a bit more lucky.
