The Real Deerhair

A sedge pattern in the Goddard tradition - with a twist

By Sven Ostermann

Dark version
The Real Deerhair sedge has both deer hair wing and hackle

Light version

Transsection
Transsection of the Real Deerhair.
The hair hackle has also been slightly trimmed on the underside.

This fly is a combination of the G+H Sedge and a hackling method adapted from Dutch Piet Weeda - making it a one-material-fly.

Hook Standard dry fly, size 12
Thread Moser's Power Silk or similar strong thread
Wing/body Spun and trimmed deer hair
Hackle Deer hair tips spun in loop
Head Tying thread
Antennae Deer hair tips

  1. Spin deer hair in the traditional manner 2/3 of the shank length
  2. Trim to the desired shape. I use a razor blade and strive for a triagular shape
  3. Grip the tips of deer hair in a metal clip (Bulldog clip or similar) and cut to desired length directly from the hide
  4. Form a loop of tying thread and put the deer hair so that only one or two millimeters are left on the butt side of the loop
  5. Twist the loop and you get a bottle brush which you ca wind around the shank while holding back the tips after each turn
  6. Whip finish, and that's it
  7. Antennae are not necessary, but they do look nice
  8. You can also trim the underside of the hackle for a lower floating fly
