Flies for perch and some handy perch tips from Dutch Eddie Bourma

By Eddie Bouma

Read about flyfishing for perch My name is Eddie Bouma. I was born in 1968 in Roden, a village in the North of Holland near Groningen. This region is not famous for it's fishing, but I like my homewater.
Like most Dutch kids I started fishing with a cheap bamboo-rod, catching small roach with bread and perch with earthworms. At the age of 8(I guess) my father took me and my brother fishing for pike. We used long bamboo-rods with a simple reel, live-bait and caught lot's of pikes. I can't remember when I started using spinners and spoons, but I think I must have been 12 years old. I always liked this active type of fishing.

In 1992 I bought my first flyrod, a 7-8 weight, after reading Bertus Rozemeyers' book "Praktijkboek voor kanjersnoek". In the beginning I had a lot of troubles with casting and catching fish. It took at least 50 fishing-days to catch my first pike on the fly.
A few years ago I joined the local flyfishing-club called "de Hunzepalmer". Gerrit Boonstra, a member gave me some advice about casting and since that day I never touched another rod than a flyrod.
My favourite sportsfish is perch, at least once a week you can find me chasing them. They're beautiful fish, tough fighters and you can find them in almost any type of water. Fishing for pike is also great, but I prefer fishing with light equipment, therefore my preference for perch. In the wintertime, when it's cold I often go fishing for roach with my #2-rod and small pheasanttails. Chasing seatrout from the shore is also great. Later this year, probably in November me and my fishing-pal Ben Koning will visit Funen again.
I can hardly wait!
