A little difficult
- Slip the cone onto the hook shank. You may have to press down the barb for it to pass.
- Start the thread just behind the hook eye.
- Build a foundation for the cone.
- Whip finish and cut thread.
- Varnish the wrap and press the cone head onto the wet varnish.
- Let dry.
- Start thread behind the cone head.
- Tie in oval tinsel.
- Cover tinsel with touching thread wraps to the rear of the hook shank.
- Wrap the thread back to the tie in point in touching tuens.
- Smooth the thread wraps with something smooth and round.
- Tie in the flat tinsel.
- Wrap the tinsel in touching turns to the rear of the hook shank and back to form a smooth body.
- Tie the tinsel down and trim.
- Prepare a skin strip and tie down in the front of the body.
- Pull it back and separate the hairs right over the oval tinsel.
- Take the tinsel forward under the shank and through the separated hair.
- Separate more hair a bit further forwards.
- Take the tinsel forward again under the shank and through the separated hair.
- Repeat until the front of the body has been reached - ideally about 5-6 wraps of the rib.
- Tie down the rib and trim.
- Prepare a bunch of deer hair by removing underfur and stacking tips.
- Trim the butts and tie in at the start of the body.
- Hold on to the tips and let the butts flair.
- Sucure with more turns through the same spot.
- Press the deer hair rearwards to compress it.
- Prepare more hair and tie in and spin in front of the existing hair.
- Repeat until the space behind the cone is densely packed with spun hair.
- Whip finish behind the cone and trim thread.
- Varnish just behind the cone and let dry.
- Trim the deer hair with a scalpel or a razor blade.
- Follow the lines of the cone, but don't cut the collar.
- Trim loose hairs with scissors and shape the rear of the head to create a distinct back edge.
