Ideal(optimal) tackle on Seatrout

Hello for All!
By a past spring, in April, I with it a friend and comrades from Poland was accomplish a fishing trip in Denmark, on an island Fyn. Mass of the most pleasant impressions from a country and from fishing. Only that darkened a journey it(to my mind) is a not correctly neat tackle. Composite Developments ICT fly rod 9#8 and Airflo Forty Plus Cold Saltwater Lines #8 used.
It maybe described already, I beg pardon I not a long ago on a forum, but colleagues would not could to share the opinion concerning an ideal tackle for a sea.
In our Kaliningrad of marine flyfishing is only conceived, therefore to know opinion of the experienced people not for whom.
I beg pardon for my English.
Beforehand thankful.
Alexander.

Alexander,

Your English is certainly better than my Polish! No need to apologize.

Regarding gear for fishing the Danish coast, I can only recommend you to go light. I myself and the guys that I fish with use much lighter gear than you, and my personal favorite rod for the coast is a 9 foot 5 or 6 weight rod equipped with a neutral, very slow sinking shooting head. I personally use a 9-12 foot monofilament leader and a 0.23mm tippet, but I know others who use polyleaders.

Some people prefer WF lines, but I find shooting heads more efficient when you need to cast all day. I do use WF lines when night fishing and sometimes when fishing under really calm conditions.

I also meet people who prefer heavier rods, but it's actually quite rare to meet anything heavier than a 7 weight, although some might go as heavy as 8 or 9 weights, but I personally find that way too much work when the assignment is to cast and cast as it is in Danish coastal fishing.

You can argue that the heavy rods cast better in hard winds, but I personally fish places where the wind helps me rather than places where I have to cast against the wind.

If you want to fish large flies in onshore winds as it's favored by many (mostly foreign) anglers, you will need heavy gear. But this type of fishing is hard work anyway, fighting waves, wind and weed in the water.

Hope this helps and answers your questions.

Thank you Martin for an answer!
To the habitants of the Kaliningrad area God was not gracious as to the habitants of island Fyn, at western, north-western, north, north - easterly winds by force more than 5 meters in a second the hidden nowhere, as we did it on Fyn, moving on other side of island.
Here on this account I thought that for a fight against wind more powerful class is needed. But as practice showed with force wind even less than a 5 m, but meeting directions of fly fishing simply not possible. Here for us spinning rules.
But experiments I it will continue. Can you recommend fly lines?
With kind regards
Alexander

Alexander,

I have actually written a whole article on the subject of selecting gear for sea trout fishing on the coast - sparked by your post here! It will be online soon.

Regarding lines, I use shooting heads almost exclusively. They will help you cast with less effort, and can also be constructed to fight the wind.

Ideal tackles for sea trout fishing...

I have spent on Danish coast approx. 80 days so far so I am not so experienced as Martin or as other danish guys.
I have tested a lot of tackles there and I prefer shooting heads or special lines similar to shooting heads too. So my first choice is Rio Outbound in floating or hover version.
I have fished with 5wt, 6wt, 7wt and 8wt rods there and in my opinion fast 6wt rod is all rounder. 8wt rod is too heavy for me. If the wind is too strong I change the place.

thank you for attention that you spare me. It is the not article, and scientific work that yet coming me to grasp. Will I attach effort and zeal, but can be there are already the prepared variants?

thank you . 80 days it is labour and accumulated experience too. My experience of catching in Denmark only week, but I think it will be succeeded again in April to arrive for a week. And it already will be 14 days!
The more if to follow your advice and hidden on other bank , then for me variants are not much, but all of them like me is Poland, Denmark, Sweden.
To meeting on Baltic.

Aleksander,

Well you may only have fished here a week, but if that's you with those fish, you have done VERY WELL!

I have been fishing the coast for close to 30 years, and I have never caught anything as beautiful as the fish in your first picture! That's a true beauty. I have caught a few large fish, but most of them kelts caught after spawning. I have also caught some really nice bright fish, but still miss getting one larger than 3 kilos. So consider yourself very lucky... or skilful ;-) and receive sincere congratulations from me. Well done!

unfortunately these fishes are" the domestic sketching" and caught on spinning.
4,6 and 4,1 kg, but believe I very want to catch on fly let even less than, therefore and I torture you questions.
But here that I noticed in a journey on Fyn is one sea, but fish different. For us, I mean Russia and Poland white(silver) fish is caught and large and very large fish meets very quite often. For you for the week of fishing our command from eight persons caught not a single fish larger 3 kilogram and all of them were Celt at least dark and covered in a number of points.
It does not affect on beauty of fish, but .... she other what in your region.
If will allow that me I will be partaken with you by the photo of fishes caught in Russia, but I warn is a bulk of catches will be on spinning.
Fly fishing does the first steps only.
With kind regards
Alexander.
P.S. Arrive after large fish to Russia.

Martin, to kind night!
By reason that you published I study from the moment of her exit. Thank you! As a veritable egoist I perceived her as an answer for my questions, but it lasted not long because I a man is social and got used to be divided. I realize meaningfulness of this labour thank you.
We with friends gather to arrive in Denmark in spring and to participate in Seatrout Open Spring 2012.
It is the first task second - to meet you.
I do not see reasons that will prevent to carry out these wishes me.

To meeting.
With the best wishes from Kaliningrad.
With kind regards
Alexander.
P.S. Invitation to Russia always in force. Welcome!

Alexander,...

Alexander,

Well, although the article was not written for you personally, it was certainly written because of your post here, so you can take a bit of the credit!

I would love to meet you if you come here. I have no plans of participating in Seatrout Open 2012, but if you are in the country and we get a chance to meet, I am certainly up for it!

Keep in touch and let me know what your plans are, and we may be able to work something out.

@ Martin...

Good morning Martin,
I have a follow up question on this thread.
I have been on Als over the weekend (not doing particullary well, 2 small trouts and a small cod). I have rediscovered how much I like saltwater flyfishing in the Baltic.
I used a 5 weight Z-Axis for the first time in the salt which was fine casting size 8 and 10 shrimp flies.
I also own a five river FTX 7 weight, which is also fine but probably a little overgunned.
I am looking into closing the gap in between. A dealer close by has offered a Loomis GL3 at a reasonable (not yet negotiated) price. I am goingb to cast it on Friday. What's your view on that rod?
TL and thx in advance
Florian

Martin Joergensen's picture

Florian,...

Florian,

The GL3 is a rod just after my heart! It's inexpensive and suitably "slow" for me. I never liked the ultra fast rods, and fished a GL3 and a GL4 for many years and still have both rods and use them often. You will also find them in my list of rods in the article on gear: http://globalflyfisher.com/fishbetter/sea-trout-gear/

If the price is OK I wouldn't hesitate!

Martin

Martin, ...

Martin,
thank you fot the fast reply. I will cast the rod on Friday. At 219 € I have a strong tenency to buy it,
Tight lines

Good evening colleagues!...

Good evening colleagues!
Good evening Martin!
I prepare to meeting, Scierra HM+ Fly Rod 9#6 bought.
What say?
With kind regards, Alexander.

Martin Joergensen's picture

Alexander,...

Alexander,

I have been fishing the "old" HMS Scandinavian Saltwater for a long time and like it.
I tried a HM3 and wasn't particularly pleased. The rod is a bit too "fast" for my taste (I call it stiff). The HM+ is an upgrade of the HM2 and HM3, but I haven't tried it, so I have no idea how it is.

You will need to test it yourself and judge it by your own standards.

you are the real diplomat and .... fishing expert. :D

[b:263a0756dc]Martin[/b:263a0756dc], I beg pardon, our journey was not succeeded. More faithful our command chose Sweden and I nowhere went.
I hope that yet is time...

Alexander,...

Alexander,

Too bad you didn't go... but no big loss, I think, because my impression is that the fishing wasn't very good during the competition.

It seems to be much better now, and we are getting more and more positive reports as the season progresses, I will be fishing for a week starting the coming weekend, and certainly hope that all the reports are right!

And a happy Easter to you too!

Martin
