buying a Saltwater fly rod #8

Hello everyone,

Currently i own a "old" Orvis graphite #7 fly rod. For me it's difficult to cast clouser minnows and other heavier flies when i am fishing in saltwater for sea bass or mackerel. In my opion the rod is a little bit too weak to cast heavier flies.

I want to use my new rod for fishing on Pike, sea bass, sea trout and bonefish.
The budget for a new fly rod is very important, it narrows the amount of rods.
My budget will be 300 euro's.

Any suggetions are welcome,
Cheers,
Lino

I have recently purchased...

I have recently purchased Scierra HM2 aftma 7 for saltwater flyfishing, a pretty fast rod compared to my previous one.
As I always suggest: go to the shop, inform the shop assistant on your budget, get the rods selected by price and then start "tasting" the rods one by one. You will easily find out which suits the best... It may be a halfday shoppping, however, bear in mind how much time our wives usually spend shopping for shoes or handbags :D :D :D

Thanks for the information...

Thanks for the information Vanuz.
I've looked on an internet shop and i see that the Scierra HM2 is now on sale. It's available for E 139,-
It's a pitty that i can't find any info on HM2 at the Sierra website..
Do you have any more information about this model?
Do you know the TFO TiCrX rod?

Cheers,
Lino

Lino,

The HM2-series have been replaced by the HM3's, so that's why you find nothing on the site. I have an HM2 and it's an excellent rod. Check out whether you get classical snake eyes or modern one-foot eyes on the HM2's you have seen. The snake eyes are better in my opinion. The rod has been made with both.

And the TFO-rods are really great rods too. Like most other rod series there are some really sweet spot rods in the bunch, so make sure you test the exact model you intend to buy before letting go of your money.

Thanks, Vanuz.

And for Lino; I would try TFO rods for sure. I have a nine foot, four piece, 5 weight and it has power. I cast hair bugs and clousers with it with a decent amount of distance. I have tried out the 7 weight version of the same rod and it is one you should consider. Have you thought of going up to a 9 weight for bigger flies? Ther is no shame in it. Really. (My go to rod lately is one I stole. I got a brand new 9 foot, 9 weigth GLX Loomis for $50. It was bought by a local land developer that wanted to try and catch a Tarpon. He flew to Key West and fished for about three hours before he got frustrated and quit. The rod was used for about fifty casts.) I use this rod for bass, shad, pike, carp and all of my salt water fishing. I can cast my biggest flies 100 feet and it really is not a broom stick. Of course the price would be $600 under normal circumstances. I used a 9 weight TFO and was impressed. And the price was in your range.

Hi Esox,...

Hi Esox,

Thank you for the information. As far as i have seen, the TFO has a very nice finish, I like the blue color.
On several other sites I have read very good comments about the TFO.
Hopefully this rod is not too stiff for my casting skills and style.
When i will be test casting this rod I will bring a clouser to cast with for sure.

I will keep you posted.
Lino

Hello everybody,...

Hello everybody,

Yes! I have my new saltwater #8 rod.
I have bought the Sage Launch. It casts very very nice and it's very nice made.

The Sage cast a lot better than my old Orvis Deschutes #7.

Thanks for all your posts.

Bye,
Lino

That's a nice rod. I cast...

That's a nice rod. I cast quite a few 8wt rods before I got mine. Will be taking it out this weekend to cast some giant flies. Congrats!

Thanks ruzek....

Thanks ruzek.

What kind of fly line are you using with this rod?
I use a fly line which is not the best line, it was one of those fly lines with no name and brand. Very cheap too. It is not casting very good.
Maybe i have to change the fly line.

Hello, 2 lines, I've got an 8wt Orvis bass bug taper line on it. Since I bass fish with it a lot, I like it for shorter casts when I need the rod to load quicker. That's also the reason I chose the Launch, this particular weight and length is sweet, the action leans to the medium side which really loads it quickly with 25' casts. I think most weight forward 8 wt lines will work great. I prefer RIO and Scientific Angler. Ended up with Orvis since it was on sale, actually a nice line.

I've also found it'll rocket out a 200 grain sinking line, in fact I can cast the whole 100' without much effort other than keeping the line managed. I believe it's a RIO line but can't remember. Hope this helps!
